Brive turns to local linen to shade its streets

How can a town break up heat islands and the stifling feeling of a heatwave? Brive's council is working on the question for the coming months and has approached Corderie Palus, in Saint-Pantaléon-de-Larche, to install woven linen canopies above some streets in the town centre. These locally made shade sails would replace the hanging umbrellas that decorated a few streets this summer. The workshop, founded in 1908 and 280 metres long, still makes ropes traditionally from linen, jute, sisal and cotton.
